Frequently asked questions

What is Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang?

Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang, also called Angelica and Loranthus Decoction or Solitary Hermit, is a classical Chinese medicine formula for long-standing joint aches and stiffness. Our version is a liquid tincture made in the USA by root + spring. In TCM terms it dispels wind-damp, strengthens tendons and bones, tonifies the Kidney, and nourishes the Liver.

What is Solitary Hermit traditionally used for?

In Chinese medicine this formula is traditionally used for chronic joint and lower back aches and stiffness that get worse in cold, damp weather and feel better with a heating pad. It is also used for numbness or heaviness in the limbs, and for the tension and tiredness that come with everyday overwork. It gently relaxes muscles and tendons.

What herbs are in the Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang tincture?

There are sixteen herbs. Du Huo, Ji Sheng, Fang Feng, Qin Jiao, Du Zhong, Huai Niu Xi, Rou Gui (cinnamon bark), Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong, Sheng Di Huang (rehmannia), Bai Shao (white peony), Ren Shen (ginseng), Fu Ling (poria), Zhi Gan Cao (honey-fried licorice), Xi Xin (asarum), and Yan Hu Suo (corydalis). Some clear wind-damp while others nourish and build.

Is Solitary Hermit a good choice for older adults?

Yes, it is often chosen for older adults. Unlike formulas that only disperse, it pairs herbs that clear wind-damp with tonics such as ginseng, Dang Gui, rehmannia, and eucommia that nourish Qi, blood, and the Kidney. That balance suits people whose aches have built up over years and who also feel depleted or tired.

How do I take the Solitary Hermit tincture?

Shake the bottle well before each use. For the maintenance serving, add 1 to 2 droppers (about 1/2 teaspoon) to warm water or juice 2 to 3 times daily. The augmented serving is 1 full teaspoon 2 to 3 times daily. To evaporate most of the alcohol, add your dose to hot water and let it sit a few minutes.

How long does it take for Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang to work?

Chinese herbs work by gradually restoring balance, so this formula is usually taken for at least a month, and often longer, before people judge how it is helping. That is especially true for aches that have been around for years. Results depend on the individual and the nature of the problem.

Who should avoid this formula?

Avoid it during pregnancy or breastfeeding, since it contains blood-moving herbs such as Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong, and Niu Xi. It is a warming formula, so it is traditionally not suited to joints that are hot, red, and swollen. If you take blood thinners or other prescription medicines, check with your doctor or a Chinese medicine practitioner first.

How big is a bottle of Solitary Hermit tincture?

Each bottle holds 1 oz and includes a dropper, which is about a 10 day supply at the maintenance serving. Since this formula is usually taken for a month or more, most people buy a few bottles at a time. The augmented serving of a full teaspoon will empty a bottle faster.
