Chinese Herbs for Skin, Hair and Healthy Aging

Chinese herbal medicine approaches skin and hair from the inside. The tradition holds that both are outward expressions of blood and of what it calls jing — the body's deep constitutional reserve — which is why the herbs traditionally used for complexion and hair are the same ones used for vitality and healthy aging generally. This collection holds more than 30 broths, teas, formulas and herbs built on that idea.

What the Tradition Connects to Skin and Hair

  • Blood — traditionally described as what nourishes and moistens skin and hair. Goji berries, red dates, longan and angelica sinensis are the classic blood-nourishing foods, and they appear throughout this collection.
  • Jing and the kidney — associated with hair colour, thickness and the pace of aging. Fo-ti (He Shou Wu) is the herb most associated with this, and its Chinese name translates roughly as "black-haired Mr. He."
  • Heat and dampness — traditionally linked to congested, inflamed-looking skin. Cooling and clearing herbs like honeysuckle, burdock and the Detoxification (Yeet Hay) broth address this side.

What's In This Collection

Alongside the herbal broths — Detoxification (Yeet Hay) and Stress Relief — you will find the Ginseng Health Tonic (Ren Shen Yang Rong Tang), Qing Chun Bao, Amardio Skin Formula, and single herbs including burdock root and seedhoneysuckle flowergynostemmaholy basil and American ginseng tea. Frequently Asked Questions

Which Chinese herb is best for skin?

It depends on what the tradition reads as the cause. For dry, dull skin the answer is blood-nourishing herbs — goji, red dates, angelica. For congested or inflamed-looking skin it is cooling and clearing herbs — honeysuckle, burdock, dandelion. These are opposite approaches, which is why "best for skin" has no single answer.

What is Yeet Hay?

Yeet hay (literally "hot air") is a Cantonese concept describing the state of feeling overheated and inflamed — typically after fried food, alcohol, lack of sleep or stress. Skin breakouts, sore throat and mouth ulcers are the classic signs. Cooling soups and teas are the traditional response, which is what our Detoxification broth is built for.

How long before I see a difference in skin or hair?

Skin turns over on a roughly four-to-six week cycle and hair grows about half an inch a month, so the tradition works on a scale of months rather than weeks. Anything promising visible change in days is not describing how either tissue actually works.

Can I take these alongside topical skincare?

Yes — they operate on different levels and are not in conflict. What internal herbs will not do is substitute for sun protection or for dermatological treatment of a diagnosed skin condition.

When should I see a dermatologist?

For any changing mole, persistent rash, painful cystic breakouts, or skin changes that come with other symptoms. Herbs are for general skin health, not for diagnosing skin conditions.
